What is DTF printing? A practical guide for business apparel
DTF is a heat-applied apparel decoration process. It is useful for detailed, multicolor artwork, but the transfer, garment and application must be compatible.
Finished garments and loose transfers are different orders
If you order a finished DTF shirt, the studio supplies the garment and applies the design. If you order loose DTF transfers or a gang sheet, you receive transfers to apply yourself. The garment and heat-press work are not included in a transfer-sheet order.
A gang sheet puts several designs on one sheet. You can combine different sizes or repeat one logo, then separate them for application. Make sure you are ordering the number of individual designs you need—not just the number of sheets.
Why DTF is useful for detailed artwork
Digital transfer printing can reproduce multicolor artwork, photographs and gradients without a separate screen for every color. That makes it worth considering for short runs or designs that would involve several screen-print setups.
A digital file is not a guarantee of a good result. Low-resolution edges, unwanted backgrounds and extremely fine details still need review. Metallic-looking colors in a file do not create real foil or a reflective metal finish.
Design for the garment, not just the preview
Leave intentional open areas when your logo permits them. A solid rectangle of print across a large area can feel different from a design with less coverage. A smaller chest logo and a large back graphic should be evaluated separately.
Request a physical sample or a small approved run when hand feel, a particular fabric or a demanding use case is important. Do not treat a mockup as evidence of wash performance or exact color matching.
Heat, pressure and fabric need to work together
Use the application instructions for the exact transfer you receive, including temperature, pressure, dwell time, peel method and any finishing press. Do not copy settings from a different brand or transfer system.
Tell us if the garment is coated, heat-sensitive, heavily textured or stretch fabric. Compatibility and dye migration need review. A care label, fabric name or online product photo alone does not prove a transfer will work.
Apparel DTF and UV-DTF are not interchangeable
Our apparel DTF transfers are for compatible fabrics. Our UV-DTF offering is for compatible tested hard surfaces. A UV-DTF hard-surface transfer should not be ordered as a substitute for an apparel transfer. If you are unsure, send a photo and product description before placing the order.
